Off the Presses

I am writing because a guy who will stop at nothing, a guy who will use drugs and alcohol as weapons, and/or a guy who will not take no for an answer is not just another horny American guy out looking for sex. He is a rapist, and this is a very important distinction to make.

On Tuesday, January 24, Katie Mahon’s article, “Sexism Promotes Oppression,” was published in the Daily Nexus. It is Mahon’s response to “Sex Please - We’re British and Inconspicuous,” and the writers’ flippant use of language that promotes sexism and sexual assault, as well as the Daily Nexus’s seeming lack of understanding of sensitivity towards race and sex. Katie Mahon is the co-coordinator of SSR.

I'd do her...

Today, the third ad of our Rape Prevention series was published in the Daily Nexus. You can find it on the back page of the newpaper. Jen Enrique, the website intern, designed the piece and Kelly Schnoover, the media co-ordinator, and Katie Mahon are responsible for its phrasing and release.

The purpose of the ad is to draw attention to the language and words that are used in a sexist and mysogynistic way. “I’d do her…” is a phrase that, while at first seemingly harmless and just a bunch of words, is actually very loaded. By saying something like that, it is reinforcing the idea of rape culture, which demeans women and makes us insensitive to sexual harrassment and assault. We invite you to read more about rape culture here.

At tonight’s SSR meeting, we will be learning how and refining the Gender Discussion! We will also continue planning It Affects Me and other upcoming events and workshops.
